Why is Music Necessary for an MRI?

There are two major reasons that MRIaudio’s music system is such a large boon to patients undergoing MRI scans:

• Hearing protection
• Relaxation/reduction of claustrophobia

A sound’s “loudness” is measured in decibels (dB); while a scan is in progress, the MRI emits very loud sounds reaching 110 decibels. This is the equivalent of a rock concert and far above the level that is harmful to human ears (85 dB). This means that while being scanned, patients require some form of ear protection, usually in the form of ear plugs. MRIaudio takes this protection a step further and provides music for the patient alongside hearing protection.

The bore of the scanner where the patient is placed ranges in size from 55 to 70 cm (21 to 27 in), which is very small and consequently, claustrophobia is a big concern – this is especially true for the infirm, as they are already not feeling well. Scans can be as short as 15 minutes, or as long as 90 minutes! While the scan is being performed, the patient must remain absolutely still for the entire time in order for the scanner to produce accurate images; if the patient moves, the whole scan must be restarted. This is where the music comes into play – rather than listening to the awful sounds produced by the scanner, the patient is able to listen to their favorite songs, which greatly reduces the effect of claustrophobia.

Patients aren’t the only ones who benefit from having a music system in the MRI; the hospitals and imaging centers do as well! MRIs are usually run all day and night with packed schedules. If a patient needs to be rescanned, the already tight schedule becomes ever more chaotic. Furthermore, patient satisfaction scores are very important to hospitals as they affect accreditation as well as their bottom line.
